Services

Maintenance & Functionality

This service addresses only the functionality of the windows, which means there is no finish (i.e. painting, staining, shellac, etc.) work done. We replace the sash cords, recondition or replace the weatherstripping and hardware, patch any loose glazing putty, wax the jambs and ensure that the window is returned to smooth and original function. This is our most in-demand service and it is the easiest way to give your home the benefit of its existing windows. Old homes need to breathe and this is how you let them do just that!

Full Restoration

Our full restoration service is our most complete option. Using approved lead-safe procedures, we remove the sash from the opening, strip the paint from the jambs and sill, prime with alkyd oil primer, and then finish with two coats of top-quality latex topcoat. The sash are taken offsite where we strip the paint and putty, lift the glass, make all the necessary wood repairs, and reglaze, prime and paint the sash. Sash are then reinstalled with new sash cord, weatherstripping and reconditioned or replaced hardware. This service takes the most time but the results speak for themselves.

Replication

In some cases, old sash goes missing or is rotted to the point that repair is a less feasible option than building a new sash. We can replicate most types of wood sash windows right in our shop. We use only traditional all-wood joinery in the construction of all of our replica wood windows. As our friends at Old Home Rescue like to say, “Keep Your Windows Wood and Your Music Vinyl.”

Storm Windows & Screens

We offer a range of historically appropriate aluminum storm windows and we have the capacity to produce traditional wood storm windows and screens as well. Your original wood window, reconditioned to function and fit properly, with an exterior storm, is often more weather and sound tight than any replacement unit.

Consultation

We can consult on your historic restoration or rehabilitation project in a number of ways. This can run the gamut from simply completing any required paperwork related to historic preservation regulation(s) (e.g. Detroit Historic District Commission applications) to connecting you with our network of restoration specialists for aspects of your project that may fall outside of our area(s) of expertise.

Painting

We also have a limited capacity for exterior and interior painting, as well as restoration of certain exterior and interior elements such as door and window casings, and cabinet and base moldings. Please contact us for availability of these services.
